When the coronavirus forced college football programs to turn to FaceTime and Zoom recruiting this past spring, Tennessee’s coaching staff looked to be the best remote recruiting staff as the Volunteers went on an impressive run of commitments. Multiple programs took social media swipes at the Vols, including Oklahoma.

Sooners assistant Will Johnson got the attention of Vol Twitter in late April when he tweeted “Don’t fall for the hype … it’s not real” before posting a photo from OU’s win over Tennessee in Knoxville during the 2015 season.

Speaking of hype, Oklahoma is off to a rough start in 2020 after being mentioned as a College Football Playoff contender. The Sooners have started the year 0-2 in Big 12 play with back-to-back losses to Kansas State and Iowa State. In a matter of two games, Lincoln Riley’s squad has gone from being 1-0 and ranked No. 3 in the AP Top 25 to 1-2 and unranked.

UT Director of Player Personnel Danny Stiff reminded Johnson to not fall for the hype.

It’s a shame the Tennessee-Oklahoma game originally scheduled for Sept. 12 was scrapped when the SEC went to a conference-only schedule for the 2020 season. The Vols and Sooners could potentially meet in a bowl game, assuming OU can turn things around.
