Big changes are coming to college football in 2024 with the College Football Playoff expanding from 4 to 12 teams. It would certainly feel appropriate for Oklahoma and Texas to be competing for the SEC Championship when the CFP will take 6 conference champions, but the timelines may not line up, per SEC commissioner Greg Sankey.

Sankey appeared on “The Paul Finebaum Show” Friday in Atlanta ahead of the SEC Championship Game. Sankey told Paul Finebaum that Oklahoma and Texas’ move to the SEC is not impacted by the Playoff expanding in 2024. For now, the Sooners and Longhorns won’t be SEC members until July 2025, unless the conference comes to a departure agreement with the Big 12.

There’s obviously plenty of time for this to change. We’ll see how things play out.
