Georgia Tech is close to hiring Tulane’s Willie Fritz for its head coaching vacancy, per a report from The Athletic’s Jeff Schultz.

According to Schultz, the program is looking to make an offer as soon as Sunday to allow the Yellow Jackets to take full advantage of available players in the transfer portal.

Fritz has been at Tulane since 2016, going 41-45 overall and 23-33 in the American Athletic Conference. However, the Green Wave are in the midst of one of their most successful seasons in some time, currently sitting at 10-2 (7-1 AAC) ahead of a showdown against UCF in the conference championship game. They are currently No. 19 in the College Football Playoff rankings, currently the highest-ranked non-Power 5 team, putting them in line for a New Year’s 6 bowl if they beat the Knights.

Fritz has connections to the state of Georgia, having coached Georgia Southern for 2 seasons, its first 2 years in the FBS, before leaving for New Orleans. He went 17-7 (14-2 Sun Belt) in that time period.

Per Schultz, the Yellow Jackets were “deep” in talks with Alabama offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Bill O’Brien. However, those “may have cooled”, Schultz tweeted, as O’Brien is reportedly seeking a return to the NFL after 2 years on the Crimson Tide sideline.
