Virginia is reportedly closing in on hiring the program’s next head coach.

According to Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports, the Cavaliers are expected to hire Tony Elliott and that a deal “should be finalized in the near future.” Elliott has served as an offensive assistant at Clemson the past 11 seasons and previously played for the Tigers from 2000-03, so he’s quite familiar with the ACC.

It’s another domino that has fallen during a busy coaching carousel. Virginia’s opening was created when Bronco Mendenhall announced that he will be stepping down after the team plays against SMU in the Fenway Bowl on Dec. 29.

The news of Elliott’s imminent hiring came on Friday, which is also when Virginia’s board of visitors voted to approve a $10.3 million transfer of funds to go toward the construction of a new facility for the football program, per Sports Illustrated’s Matt Newton.

It’s possible that could have helped some of the reported snags in negotiations that had taken place between Elliott and Virginia of late.

So the Cavaliers could now be on the rise after going 11-11 over the past 2 seasons, as they’ll have a better facility and a 1st-time head coach in Elliott who should be eager to lead the program to success.
