Greg McElroy predicts Carson Beck will be Georgia’s starting quarterback in 2023. The ESPN broadcaster shared his thoughts Monday on his “Always College Football” podcast.

McElroy pointed to 2 primary reasons for his prediction: Beck has been enrolled since 2020 and there have not been any incoming or outgoing UGA QB transfers this offseason. Top-50 QB recruits like Beck typically transfer if they have not started in their first 3 seasons, McElroy noted. He believes that Beck has either been promised the starting job or “sees the light at the end of the tunnel.”

Beck’s main competition for the starting competition appears to be Brock Vandagriff, a former 5-star recruit in the 2021 recruiting class. Kirby Smart told reporters that Beck and Vandagriff both worked with the first-string offense Saturday in UGA’s first spring scrimmage. Gunner Stockton, a 2022 signee, worked with second- and third-teamers, per Smart.

“Carson has really good command of the offense,” Smart said after Saturday’s scrimmage. “He understands it inside and out. He communicates it. He gets things correct. He had a couple poor decisions and choices today, but he also made some plays, made some really food throws. He has a really good presence in the pocket, moves around.

“Brock made some plays. He made some plays getting out of the pocket. Made some good throws. He had a couple of downfield throws that I think he wished he had back to give us a chance in some 50/50 situations. Keep the ball in bounds with that. He did a really good job in 2-minute.”

Georgia’s G-Day Red and Black spring game is set for April 15. Beck and Vandagriff’s performances figure to be leading storylines.
