Will Muschamp has a new role at Georgia for 2024. In UGA’s announcement of the hiring of Travaris Robinson, it was noted that Muschamp is moving to an off-field role as a defensive assistant as he seeks to spend more time with his family.

Muschamp, 52, actually initially joined Smart’s staff as a defensive analyst in February 2021 after his dismissal as the head coach at South Carolina. He stepped into the special teams coordinator role during Scott Cochran’s absence.

When Dan Lanning left to take the Oregon head coaching job following the 2021 season, Muschamp became UGA’s co-defensive coordinator alongside Glenn Schumann. Muschamp maintained that role through the 2023 season.

For Georgia, it should be a seamless transition as Robinson worked under Muschamp on staff at Florida, Auburn and South Carolina. Following Muschamp’s firing at South Carolina, Robinson took assistant positions at Miami and Alabama coaching defensive backs.

Muschamp, 52, has been in coaching for nearly three decades. After playing safety at UGA from 1991-to-1994, he landed a graduate assistant position at Auburn in 1995.

After time at Valdosta State, Muschamp joined Nick Saban’s LSU staff. He followed Saban to the Miami Dolphins for the 2005 season before returning to the college ranks, taking the Auburn defensive coordinator position in 2006.

Texas hired Muschamp in 2008. He was the Longhorns’ coach in waiting under Mack Brown when Florida hired him as the new head coach to succeed Urban Meyer in 2011.

Muschamp was fired during the 2014 season, his fourth at Florida. He finished with a 28-21 record as head coach of the Gators.

Following his UF tenure, Muschamp returned to Auburn as defensive coordinator on Gus Malzahn’s staff for the 2015 season. Muschamp’s stay on The Plains did not last long, as he became the head coach at South Carolina ahead of the 2016 season.

South Carolina fired Muschamp during the 2020 season as the Gamecocks were 2-5. Muschamp’s record was 28-30 with the Gamecocks, making him 56-51 as a head coach.
