There’s no doubt that this has been a crazy year of college basketball, so it’s not a stretch to figure that a typically unpredictable tournament may be more unpredictable than ever. Avid sports fans know that the first round odds rarely tell the story of each game, as underdogs often pull off improbable upsets.

With so many games on the board throughout the weekend, betting action figures to be fast and furious, particularly given this year’s NCAA Tournament marks the first time that bettors in several states can legally wager on March Madness. In fact, bettors in Colorado, Tennessee, Michigan and Illinois (among others) will be able to legally place bets on the action this year.

March Madness Betting Trends to Know

If you’re looking to wager on the 2021 NCAA Tournament odds, then there are some important betting trends worth knowing.

Bettors love to focus on No 1. vs. No. 16 matchups, No. 8 vs. No. 9 showdowns, and the ever popular No. 5 vs. No. 12 games.

Let’s take a look at some important trends to know before filling out your March Madness brackets and making individual game wagers.

  • The first thing to know is that No. 1 seeds aren’t losing in the first round. In the history of the tourney, No. 1 seeds are a ridiculous 135-1 outright against No. 16 seeds. The only loss came back in 2018 when No. 1 Virginia lost to No. 16 UMBC.
  • Speaking of No. 1 seeds, they’re a great bet to win, but not always the best bet to cover. Over the last 15 tournaments, No. 1 seeds are just 30-29-1 ATS — just barely over a 50% cover rate. When they’re favored by 20+ points, like we see this year with teams like Baylor (-26.5 over Hartford) and Gonzaga, No. 1 seeds are only 21-27 ATS.
  • Looking to bang a No. 12 seed such as UCSB or Winthrop? Know that No. 12 seeds are 333-325-2 ATS over the last 15 years. When an underdog of six points or less, No. 12 seeds are 24-14-1 ATS — that’s covering more than 60% of the time. Pretty good.
  • Looking to get into some No. 8 vs. No. 9 action? It really is a toss up, at least recently, as No. 9 seeds are 29-28-3 ATS. That being said, when the No. 9 seed is an underdog (which isn’t always the case), they are a profitable 20-13-1 ATS.  You may want to stay away when the No. 9 is a favorite — such teams are just 9-15-1 ATS in that role.
