Damar Hamlin received the latest positive news on Friday morning, as he reportedly talked to teammates after a breathing tube was removed.

Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium reported that Hamlin has had a breathing tube in body through his throat since Monday night, but no longer needs it and can breathe fully on his own.

At a press conference on Thursday, doctors from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center shared that Hamlin made significant progress. Hamlin communicated in writing with his family and others who have been at his bedside since he went into cardiac arrest 3 days ago during Monday Night Football against the Cincinnati Bengals. His first question was, “Did we win?” his doctors said Thursday.

“The answer is yes, Damar, you won. You’ve won the game of life.” Dr. Timothy Pritts told reporters in a conference call after Hamlin was rushed after he collapsed and was resuscitated on the field.

The Thursday update added that Hamlin remained critically ill and in the hospital’s intensive care unit, but he began to wake up Wednesday night, and it appears his neurological function is intact, meaning he can follow commands and move, Pritts said.

Dr. William Knight IV said doctors had not yet determined the cause of Hamlin’s cardiac arrest and that testing is ongoing.
