Brent Venables buyout, contract details revealed in report
Brent Venables signed a fully-guaranteed contract with Oklahoma, a report by The Athletic has revealed.
Venables’ deal is 6 years for $43.5 million, per Stewart Mandel. Under this deal, Venables would be owed the remainder of his contract if Oklahoma fires him.
Should Oklahoma fire head coach Brent Venables without cause over the course of his six-year, $43.5M contract, it would owe him the full amount, according to a copy of the agreement obtained by The Athletic.

Venables, 51, was hired as the head coach of the Sooners on Dec. 5, 2021 following Lincoln Riley’s departure to take the USC job. It is Venables’ second stint with the Sooners. Venables was an Oklahoma assistant from 1999-to-2011, holding the defensive coordinator from 2004-11.
Venables was Clemson’s defensive coordinator from 2012-to-2021, winning the Broyles Award in 2016.
In Venables’ first season as a head coach, Oklahoma is 4-3 overall and 1-3 in Big 12 play. The Sooners are off in Week 8.
