The Maxwell Award, much like the Heisman Trophy, is given to the best player in college football each season.

Though it is open to defensive players, too, it hasn’t been given to a defender since 2012, when it went to Notre Dame LB Manti Te’o.

On Monday, the 2019 preseason watch list was released, naming 80 players. All of them were offensive players, interestingly enough. As you can see below, 16 SEC offensive players were named to the watch list:

  • Jake Bentley, QB, South Carolina
  • Kelly Bryant, QB, Mizzou
  • Joe Burrow, QB, LSU
  • Clyde Edwards-Helaire, RB, LSU
  • Feleipe Franks, QB, Florida
  • Jake Fromm, QB, Georgia
  • Jarrett Guarantano, QB, Tennessee
  • Najee Harris, RB, Alabama
  • Kylin Hill, RB, Mississippi State
  • Jerry Jeudy, WR, Alabama
  • Kellen Mond, QB, Texas A&M
  • Lamical Perine, RB, Florida
  • Scottie Phillips, RB, Ole Miss
  • D’Andre Swift, RB, Georgia
  • Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Alabama
  • Ke’Shawn Vaughn, RB, Vanderbilt

Tagovailoa won the award last year, and will likely be in the mix to win it again when all is said and done this fall.

However, the other 15 guys on this list will be coming for him, trying to claim the award for themselves.
