We’re now through eight weeks of the 2018 college football season, and the College Football Playoff picture is still murky.

Just when we thought we had a solid top four in place with Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson and Notre Dame, the Buckeyes went into Purdue and left with a 49-20 loss on Saturday night. Meanwhile, LSU picked up a huge win against Mississippi State to put themselves in Playoff contention.

Following Saturday’s action, analyst Danny Kanell updated his top eight teams, and he has Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame and Michigan in his current top four:

Michigan and LSU both have legitimate cases for Playoff inclusion at the moment, but the LSU situation will sort itself out in a couple of weeks, when the Tigers play host to the No. 1 Crimson Tide.

We’ll see what happens next week, when a game between one-loss Florida and one-loss Georgia could vault the winner into Kanell’s top eight.
