Some media members are just determined to rain on a fanbase’s parade.

ESPN’s SEC reporters were recently asked to pick the most overrated team in the SEC based on its ranking in the ESPN Football Power Index. The site’s four conference reporters voted, and one team was a particularly popular pick.

  • Edward Aschoff: Auburn (No. 5 FPI)
  • David Ching: Auburn
  • Greg Ostendorf: Florida (No. 15)
  • Alex Scarborough: Auburn

All four offered explanations for their picks. A common theme among the Auburn voters was that staff changes and losses on the defensive line are a little too much to expect the Tigers to be a top-5 team in 2017.

Ostendorf, on the other hand, isn’t sold on Florida being able to replace the majority of their starters on defense under a new coordinator. He also thinks the projected eight wins is on the high side, as the Gators open the season against Michigan and closes with perennial power FSU.

If the Gators and Tigers are truly the most overrated teams as these reporters believe, that could be a bit of relief for Georgia (No. 13 FPI). Auburn and Florida are the Bulldogs’ highest-ranked opponents in the early FPI. Both of those games are also played away from Sanford Stadium. The Georgia-Florida game is annually played in Jacksonville, and this year’s schedule has UGA traveling to Auburn.

It’s no surprise that Alabama is on top of the SEC at No. 2 in the FPI (behind only Ohio State). Auburn, Florida, Georgia, LSU (No. 6) and Tennessee (No. 19) all make the top 20, and Ching feel they all qualify for the overrated label.

“Honestly all of the SEC teams in the top 20 who aren’t Alabama feel overvalued to me,” Ching wrote to introduce his pick.
