Greg Sankey discusses SEC men's basketball tournament plans for host city, championship date
The SEC held its 2022 men’s basketball tournament in Tampa. Don’t expect that to happen again any time in the near future.
Sankey told reporters at the SEC spring meetings that Nashville is under contract to host the men’s hoops tournament from 2023-to-2028, with another 5-year option. He likened Nashville as the hoops host to Atlanta hosting the football conference championship game.
SEC men’s basketball tournament is not leaving Nashville any time soon. Current contract runs 2023-28 with another five-year option. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey compares it to the SEC football calling Atlanta home for its championship game. No plans to look elsewhere.

Sankey also commented on another hot top in SEC hoops: tournament championship day. The SEC commissioner acknowledged that coaches have requested a move to Saturday instead of Selection Sunday. The league’s coaches feel that what happens in the Sunday championship game is not considered by the NCAA Tournament selection committee, which is making the final changes to the field of 68 largely dependent on automatic qualifiers. TV contracts, though, could get in the way of moving the final SEC men’s hoops game from Sunday to Saturday.
Biggest reason being: TV contracts.
