A Division II program is going on NCAA probation for 137 infractions. The NCAA announced this week that Saginaw Valley State University, based in Michigan, will vacate wins in 15 different sports, face a $5,000 fine and four years of probation after its athletic department self-reported ineligible participation of 130 student-athletes over a five-year period (during the academic years of 2013-14 to 2017-18), per Hugh Bernreuter of MLive.com.

While the number is eye-catching, the NCAA is sympathetic to the situation, acknowledging the athletic department’s limited financial resources for compliance.

From the NCAA’s press release:

The committee is cognizant of the financial challenges faced by many Division II member schools. However, this case illustrates the need for all Division II schools to ensure that they devote the necessary funds and staffing to establish an effective and reliable compliance program that, at a minimum, can fulfill basic and fundamental responsibilities of membership, including eligibility certification, as exemplified in this case.
