In what could have been a headline from The Onion, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported a bizarre story on Sunday morning.

According to Schefter, one of the most-connected people in the NFL, the Cleveland Browns want to interview Condoleezza Rice for their head coaching job.

Rice, who served as Secretary of State before more-recent stints as a member of the College Football Playoff selection committee and as a member of a panel that recommended major changes to college basketball.

Schefter says Rice would be the first woman ever to interview for an NFL head coaching job, and that the Browns could end up offering her a different role if they don’t end up hiring her for that position:

“She’s an amazing person,” one Browns source told ESPN.

The interview process could even lead to Rice becoming more involved in the organization in an official capacity or as a consultant.

As much as the Browns admire Rice — she attends some of their games and was spotted on the field with owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam before Cleveland’s game in Oakland on Sept. 30 — she admires them.

It’s highly unlikely that Rice is on the sidelines for the Browns next season, but it was also unlikely that someone with no coaching experience would even get an interview.

If she gets an interview, it’ll be good to see the first woman land an interview, but don’t expect her to land the job. Of course, this is the Browns, so who knows what will happen?
