If you missed the news from Friday, Alabama has once again been selected as the preseason favorite to win the Southeastern Conference by the league’s media following the 2018 SEC Media Days event from Atlanta.

The Crimson Tide received 193 votes to win the conference from the league media, more than any other league program. Georgia finished second with 69 votes (Nice). Auburn received 14 votes, South Carolina registered four, Florida received a pair and Mississippi State and Missouri both received one vote each.

While Alabama fans may find that’s reason to celebrate heading into the 2018 season, history suggests winning the SEC Media Days poll is actually a bad omen for their chances of claiming the SEC Championship Trophy in Atlanta come early December.

Only six times since 1992 has the predicted champion at SEC Media Days proceeded to win the SEC Championship. That equates to the media accurately predicting the league winner only 23 percent of the time.

If history holds true, the rest of the league has nearly an 80 percent chance of winning the conference in 2018.
