With the first day of SEC Media Days in the rear view mirror, questions obviously arose as to if it’s possible that Oklahoma and Texas’ move to the conference from the Big 12 will happen sooner rather than later.

The 2 universities are scheduled to join in 2025. When asked during his media availability on Monday if that timeline could be accelerated, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey responded, “That’s not up to me,” while adding that “the relationship between Texas and Oklahoma to the Big 12” would determine such a decision. That came days after new Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark mentioned that “the best interests of the conference” came first, but neither confirmed or denied a possible early exit.

According to Oklahoma’s Joe Castiglione and Texas’s Chris Del Conte, it appears to be business as usual.

“Look, I know people are asking a lot of those questions and it’s fair,” Castiglione said on Monday during the Texas High School Coaches’ Association annual meeting, according to ESPN. “There’s a lot changing around us. If that facilitates a conversation that needs to take place about an earlier departure then it does. But I have said very consistently…that we informed the conference that we would lead after ’25 and we plan on fulfilling our obligations and do the honorable thing.”

Del Conte echoed those sentiments.

“We’re in the Big 12. We’re going to honor our commitments. Those things are all premature,” he said.

Given the fact that UCLA and USC are set to join the Big Ten from the Pac-12 a year before Oklahoma and Texas come on board the SEC, we’ll see if things stay according to schedule.
