College football fans are always eager to learn how coaches and media members rank the top 25 teams. Out in Las Vegas, oddsmakers have power rankings for all 133 FBS teams.

Phil Steele, widely recognized as a college football guru, has connections to the smartest folks in the desert. Steele has published weekly in-season Vegas Power Ratings since his time at ESPN. He’s now independent but continues to publish the Vegas Power Ratings, with weekly updates on his own website during the season.

Like the AP Top 25 and the Coaches Poll, Georgia is on top in Steele’s Vegas Power Rankings with the top rating. Alabama moved up to No. 11, ahead of LSU, as the next SEC team.

Steele notes that the difference in 2 teams’ Vegas Ratings gives an idea of what the opening betting line would be if they met on a neutral field. In the case of Georgia and Alabama, the Bulldogs would be favored by somewhere between 5.5 and 6 points if there was a Week 5 neutral-site meeting.

The Vegas Rankings don’t always reflect prior results on the field. Steele cites the rankings of Tennessee and Arkansas as examples.

Tennessee just lost at Florida in the Swamp but if the two teams played again this week at a neutral site Tennessee would be favored and Tennessee is ranked higher. Arkansas lost to BYU at home in a game Arkansas had a 424-281-yard edge. If the two matched up again Arkansas would be favored at home by close to 10 points.
