In 2014, the Steve Spurrier-led South Carolina Gamecocks lost their Week 1 matchup against Texas A&M 52-28.

The Gamecocks’ in-state rival, Clemson, lost to Georgia 45-21 to open its season, prompting Spurrier to give Clemson coach Dabo Swinney a call to commiserate over the losses and offer encouragement.

On Thursday, Swinney played the hilarious voicemail and laughed about Spurrier’s lackluster encouragement tactics.

While Spurrier admits the Gamecocks were dominated for the whole game, he says Clemson should feel good that they only got dominated “for the last quarter, maybe the second half.”

“That dang Gurley guy,” Spurrier says of then-Georgia RB Todd Gurley. “I don’t know how we’re gonna tackle him either.”

Though some might say the message wasn’t very uplifting, Swinney insisted Spurrier meant well.

“That was just his way of really being a friend and offering some encouragement,” Swinney said.

There will never be another Head Ball Coach.
