On Monday, Miami coach Manny Diaz announced that freshman QB Jarren Williams had won the Hurricanes’ quarterback competition.

That means Williams beat out former Ohio State transfer Tate Martell, who was granted an NCAA waiver to play right way. That was a controversial decision to say the least.

Now, 247Sports reports that Martell didn’t participate in Monday’s practice for the Hurricanes. Obviously, there are a number of reasons Martell could have missed practice, but the timing of this news is very interesting.

Earlier on Monday, here’s what Diaz said about picking Williams as the team’s starter:

“All three guys showed tremendous improvement and development, which is a credit to their hard work and the work of Dan Enos and his offensive staff,” he said through a release that was sent out by the school. “We believe we can win with all three guys, however, we feel like Jarren has the greatest upside due to his passing ability, his instincts and his determination.”

Will Martell be on the move again soon? We’ll likely get some sort of explanation for his Monday absence in the coming days.
