Jerry Stackhouse’s tenure as Vanderbilt’s head coach will reportedly not see a 6th season.

College basketball insider Jon Rothstein reports that “barring an unforeseen set of circumstances,” Stackhouse is not returning to Nashville for the 2024-25 campaign. Vandy went 70-92 in 5 seasons under Stackhouse.

The news comes after Vanderbilt’s 2023-24 came to a close with a loss to Arkansas in the SEC Tournament. The Commodores saw a 14-point 2nd-half lead erased by the Razorbacks.

Vanderbilt went 9-23 this season. The Dores were 4-14 in SEC play during the regular season, finishing 13th in the conference standings.

Stackhouse couldn’t get quite over the hump, then things went south

Bryce Drew last took Vanderbilt to the NCAA Tournament in 2017 in his first season succeeding Kevin Stallings. Drew was let go after back-to-back losing scenes, and Vandy turned to Stackhouse in his first head coaching gig.

Stackhouse’s bio boasts that Vanderbilt was the only SEC program to improve its NET ranking in three consecutive seasons from 2019-22.

The 2022-23 campaign was Stackhouse’s most successful at Vanderbilt. The Commodores went 18-13 with an 11-7 conference record during the regular season.

Despite SEC Tournament wins over LSU and Kentucky, Vanderbilt was snubbed from the 2023 NCAA Tournament despite a 20-14 record. Stackhouse’s squad would play in the NIT, picking up 2 more victories to finish 22-15, the program’s best year since a 25-win season in 2011-12.

While Vanderbilt is known as a difficult place to recruit, Stackhouse coached some notable talent, including 4 players who have gone on to play in the NBA. His first team included 2 NBA Draft selections, Aaron Nesmith and Saben Lee.  Stackhouse also coached Liam Robbins and Scotty Pippen Jr.

In 2023-24, Vanderbilt got off to an 0-7 start in SEC play and did not recover, finishing 4-14 against conference foes. The Dores lost 5 of their last 7 to finish the regular season, but did manage an upset of Florida in the home finale.
