Here’s what SEC head coaches had to say on National Signing Day

Alabama’s Nick Saban after bringing in the nation’s top-ranked class for the sixth consecutive year: “We don’t worry about perception, we worry about players who can be good. You don’t know what kind of class you have until these guys develop. It’s everybody’s guesstimate right now.”

Arkansas’ Bret Bielema on the four linebackers the Razorbacks signed: “I think they can do two things. They can all run and they can all hit.”

Auburn’s Gus Malzahn on the team’s outlook at quarterback including the new signees: “(John Franklin III) is going to get a chance to win the (starting quarterback) job. (Woody Barrett) will, too.”

Florida’s Jim McElwain on the upside of Feleipe Franks: “We’re excited about him and tile that are in here with that class as freshmen. Here is the great thing, at that position, too, is you’re getting an opportunity through these workouts right now to really kind of build a lot of — kind of see the leadership piece of it, too, as to how they go about their daily work. I know this: We are going to be able to complete some routes on air because these guys can throw it now.”

Georgia’s Kirby Smart on competing with former boss Nick Saban for in-state talent: “I don’t recruit against Nick Saban. I recruit for the University of Georgia. It’s critical for us to get good players from our state (but) we’re obviously not going to get them all.”

Kentucky’s Mark Stoops on whether it’s realistic for the touted offensive line signees to make an immediate impact: “I think people have to put the brakes on a bit. We’ve got to develop them. It takes years. … With that being said, I think a guy like Drake (Jackson) is one of the most technique sound guys I’ve seen coming out of high school in a long time. I think Landon (Young) is most definitely one of the more talented true freshmen I’ve been around in any school. He has great upside. He’s a worker, humble, wants to play. I think he has a good chance. Tate (Leavitt), he is not a high school guy, so we expect him to come in and be ready to play.”

LSU’s Les Miles on the strength of the 2016 class: “We tied the record for signing ESPN300 prospects with 19. We signed the top defensive line, defensive back and receiver groups in the country. It’s certainly a class you can compete for a national championship with.”

Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen on signing five-star defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons: “There was a lot of excitement. I truly believe in my heart this is where he belonged. I’m thrilled to have him. You look at him being the next Fletcher Cox. He’s a very special player.”

Missouri’s Barry Odom on flipping tight end Brendan Scales from Alabama: “Cornell Ford continued to recruit Brendan the last few months. We sold him on the vision that he was wanted and needed. … Our staff has worked with great urgency. We were on the road together for 12 days. Really excited to put together the class.”

South Carolina’s Will Muschamp on trying to improve the defensive line: “The most exerting thing you do as a football player is pass rush. You run out of gas pretty quickly, so especially early in the season, as hot as it is in Columbia and in the Southeast, you’ve got to have as many as you can to rotate up front. It’s a developmental position. We needed to gain more girth up front. To be able to get Kobe (Smith) and Stephon (Taylor) and some of those guys to come on board, that was huge for us.”

Tennessee’s Butch Jones on looking for overall team speed to improve special teams with this signing class: “We had some very specific needs in our program this year. We thought we needed to bring in as much speed and athleticism as we could, bring in players that can play multiple positions and give us flexibility whether it’s on the offensive side of the ball, defensive side of the ball or special teams. You can never have enough team speed as we have all come to know in this conference. That lends itself to playing well in terms of your special teams.”

Texas A&M’s Kevin Sumlin on the team’s quarterback situation after National Signing Day: “Trevor (Knight) was the most important recruit. He’s a man at this point. He’s been on big stages and won. (Three-star quarterback Nick Starkel) has a tremendous upside. He’s a tall, rangy guy who’s going to need to put on a little weight.”

Vanderbilt’s Derek Mason on three-star quarterback Deuce Wallace: “He is accurate and he is a winner. He has leadership skills that are very important in that room.”
