As we finish the first month of the season, we’re beginning to see many players act on the new redshirt rule that allows them to appear in up to four games and still retain a year of eligibility.

The latest — and perhaps most accomplished — addition to this trend came Monday when Oklahoma State receiver Jalen McCleskey announced his intentions to redshirt and transfer out of the program. The senior, who has more career receptions than anyone on the Cowboys’ current roster, ranks sixth in school history in catches and ninth in receiving touchdowns.

Despite his eye-popping numbers, McCleskey apparently felt underused in Oklahoma State’s offense. He’s tied for the team lead with two touchdown catches and is second with 15 receptions, but his 155 yards are just fourth-most for the Cowboys.

McCleskey’s decision is emblematic of a movement that will likely pick up steam this week as most teams prepare for their fifth game. The most notable case of transfers in the SEC has come via Auburn, which last week saw a string of players elect to redshirt and leave the program.

There’s no telling who the next big-name transfer will be, but we’ll probably know in a matter of days.
