If athletic directors across the nation have any say in it, those favoring expansion to the College Football Playoff will be getting there wish in the near future.

The current, four-team format is set to expire at the end of the 2025 college football season and while the playoff could potentially be changed before that deadline is up, it appears unlikely that the sport will push to expand before that point in time.

However, you can bet there will be ongoing negotiations when it comes to expanding the College Football Playoff the moment the current deal comes to an end. While that’s been speculated on basically from the moment the four-team Playoff was announced, a recent survey of 112 college athletic directors shows that the power brokers across college football are eager to see the format expanded.

College football insider Brett McMurphy of Stadium recently shared his latest piece following an anonymous survey of college athletic directors. The topic of McMurphy’s latest article was the potential expansion of the College Football Playoff.

According to the responses McMurphy received back, 88 percent of ADs wish to see the College Football Playoff expanded. While the ADs did not come to a consensus on what format college football should select, 72 percent believe an eight-team format would be the way to go.

Interestingly, just over half of the ADs surveyed believe the quarterfinals of an eight-team playoff should be played on a home campus setting, not at a neutral site bowl game.

If that happens, there’s no doubt an SEC stadium would be hosting College Football Playoff games – likely on an annual basis.
