College athletes and coaches better get used to more time on Zoom calls as the NCAA has announced all D1 sports have been given twice as much virtual meeting time starting on Monday.

This time allowance runs from April 20 through May 31.

College programs are still not allowed to require student-athletes to train or work out while they are away from campus due to the coronavirus pandemic but they can hold virtual meetings with their players. Up until now, the NCAA allocated four hours a week to such meetings but that has been extended to eight hours per week.

The NCAA is requiring that student-athletes receive at least one day off a week from these meetings while away from campus. Asking players to train is still prohibited by NCAA rules.

Programs are also required to give students a week off during finals exams.

Penn AD and Division I Council Coordination Committee chair M. Grace Calhoun issued the following statement in a prepared statement:

“This change not only allows coaches to continue to educate their student-athletes but also fosters the connectivity that comes with team-based activities. Regular, individual check-ins between student-athletes and coaches remain permissible and are encouraged.”
