Greg Sankey spoke with Paul Finebaum on the SEC Network on Wednesday, and discussed the landscape of college football as the College Football Playoff Board of Managers is set to meet Saturday in Indianapolis.

Sankey has long supported the 4-team Playoff, and he has promoted the SEC’s success in it. But he told Finebaum that he believes the SEC has a responsibility to support quality college football around the country.

“I do think we’ve impacted the regular season with the 4-team Playoff,” he said. “We have impacted bowl games. I know Nick (Saban) spoke to that earlier this week, so what can we do to adjust, and there aren’t simple answers and I respect my colleagues differences of opinion. But I do think we need to make the postseason games as relevant as possible.”

That’s why Sankey said adjustments to accommodate conference champions, and still keep the 6 best teams in, but it’s an annual competition to see who would be the 6 best conference champions even though 4 teams works for the SEC.

“I think creating opportunities for others to make sure college football remains strong nationally is a compelling reason to give a little bit,” Sankey said. “We’ve given up front. Perhaps tactically I should have waited and contributed on the back end in a different way. But the reality is we’re here. We’re here because 3 years ago a set of our colleagues really demanded expansion and expansion sooner rather than later and now it’s up to the group to see if we can come to that conclusion.”
