Paul Finebaum has made his disdain for Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh known over the years.

So, naturally, when Michigan announced a contract extension for Harbaugh after he flirted heavily with the NFL this offseason, Finebaum took issue.

On Thursday morning’s edition of “Get Up” on ESPN, Finebaum sounded off on the Wolverines for giving into their coach who didn’t want to stay around:

“I think it’s preposterous, but it’s also a necessity of college football,” Finebaum said. “To stay ahead in recruiting, you have to keep extending coaches, and that’s how programs get in so much fiscal trouble. What sense does this make? Jim Harbaugh did not want to be there. We all know that. On National Signing Day 2 weeks ago, he got on a plane and went to Minnesota wanting that job for the reasons we just heard — he wants to win a Super Bowl. He didn’t get the job, so he crawls back to Michigan and Warde Manuel, the AD, really has no option. He extends Harbaugh’s contract by a year. This is not that dramatic. I think these 2 sides are stuck with each other. This marriage is going nowhere. Michigan has a good team for next year, but the optics of this, to me, are really bad.”

Can Harbaugh get the Wolverines back to the College Football Playoff in 2022? Will he still be at Michigan by the time this latest extension expires following the 2026 season? We’ll find out over the next few years if Harbaugh’s tenure stays strong or fizzles out.
