With Hurricane Irma bearing down on Florida, people are evacuating the state and college football games are being affected.

Miami, Florida and Florida State have already canceled their non-conference games, but other programs like FIU don’t have that same option.

Therefore, they reached out to UAB to inquire about using Birmingham’s Legion Field on Saturday. According to AL.com, Birmingham mayor William Bell and UAB athletic director Mark Ingram were more than happy to lend the stadium to FIU for the game against Alcorn State:

“They didn’t want to lose opportunity to play the game because it would impact their overall record at end of year and possibly bowl contention,” Bell said. “Because of the fact we put in so much energy to put into make sure Legion Field was ready for UAB, we felt like it was in proper order to entertain a game being played there.”

That game will be held on Friday night at 6 p.m. and then the stadium will also host Georgia Southern for its game against New Hampshire on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Bell estimated that the city would lose between $15,000 and $20,000 hosting the games, but said he didn’t think twice about offering to help:

“We just want them to come and have a great time and a great experience,” Bell said. “We don’t know how many people are going to show up, but there wasn’t enough time to get tickets printed up. Even if there was, we weren’t interested in making money off of this. We wanted to show support in times of need.”

Bell added that this offer was all about being a good neighbor and trying to help out programs during their times of need:

“We may be in the same predicament where we would have to depend on another city to help our schools or citizens out,” Bell said. “If you want to have good neighbors, you have to be a good neighbor.”
