Week 1 featured a variety of matchups in the SEC — some teams played Power 5 foes in primetime, others scheduled cupcakes, and Tennessee even got in a little MACtion. With no SEC East team truly dominating a decent opponent, the SEC West rules the momentum rankings to start the new season.

Uncle Mo watched the games, checked out the polls before and after and read all the beat writer breakdowns to figure out which SEC teams have the most momentum going for them right now.

Let’s see where everyone stands one week into the season:

1. Alabama: Jake Coker looked a lot like those Alabama quarterbacks people have dismissed over the years as boring game managers. UA quarterbacks might not be prime viral GIF material, but they win football games. With a No. 2 ranking in the Associated Press Poll and the biggest resume boost of the weekend, the Crimson Tide got a rolling start toward a championship season.

2. Texas A&M: FOX Sports college football writer Stewart Mandel received a lot of eye rolls outside of Texas for his preseason pick of Texas A&M as SEC champion, but he’s probably waving to the haters after the new No. 16 Aggies crushed then-No. 15 Arizona State, 38-17, in Houston. Texas A&M debuts higher than expected in the 2015 momentum poll.

3. Auburn: If the Tigers take care of business in the SEC West, Saturday’s 31-24 win over Louisville is likely to cited by the playoff committee in the season’s final weeks. It’s a solid victory to build upon for AU, but two divisional rivals gained more momentum due to more dominating performances.

4. Ole Miss: This entry required a final check on secsports.com to make sure Mississippi didn’t score again on poor UT Martin … the score still says 76-3. The Hugh Freeze era in Oxford, Miss., has primarily been known for defense, but Saturday’s onslaught of offense served as a warning shot to the rest of the SEC: the Rebels are gunning to take over the top spot, and they’ve got the firepower.

5. Mississippi State: MSU’s 34-16 road win at Southern Miss wasn’t the most exciting game of the week, but getting into the Associated Press Top 25 definitely shows movement in the right direction.

6. Arkansas: The Razorbacks decided to give this passing thing a try, and it was borderline erotic. Brandon Allen threw for a career-high 308 yards and four touchdowns in a 48-13 win over UTEP. A multi-dimensional Bret Bielema team gives Arkansas some momentum toward being a legitimate threat in the SEC West.

7. Florida: UF topping the rest of the SEC East in the momentum rankings this week does not reflect its current strength relative to the division. With that said, Saturday night’s 61-13 win over New Mexico State ushered in some much-needed energy for a program taking its first steps in a challenging climb back to national relevance. The first game with Jim McElwain at the helm gave Gator Nation a reason to be (cautiously) optimistic about the future, and showed the recruits visiting The Swamp that Florida football can actually be fun to watch.

T8. Georgia: A controlling 51-14 win for the Bulldogs over Louisiana-Monroe doesn’t move the momentum needle. UGA’s big picture outlook as the favorite to win the SEC East and potentially make the final four has not changed. Momentum will increase once Georgia passes a real test.

T8. Missouri: UM’s 34-3 victory over Southeast Missouri State provides no real change in momentum. If Missouri has taught SEC followers anything, it’s that early non-conference games have no bearing on how it will fare in the SEC East.

T8. LSU: The Tigers game with McNeese State was stopped in the first quarter and ultimately canceled due to weather. No record means no change in momentum from preseason.

11. Tennessee: UT slides in behind status quo teams Georgia, Missouri and LSU after allowing 433 passing yards to Bowling Green in a 59-30 win. The offseason hype was for the Volunteers to be a potential contender for the conference title, and those predictions can’t be made with the same confidence at the moment. Defeating Oklahoma would catapult the Volunteers up the momentum rankings.

12. South Carolina: The Gamecocks’ ugly victory over UNC doesn’t make any conference foes fear them right now, but it does help with the resume for future polls and bowl considerations. USC needs to win this week against Kentucky to get the momentum moving back in the right direction.

13. Kentucky: UK’s fourth quarter collapse and late recovery in its 40-33 squeaker of a win over Louisiana-Lafayette doesn’t inspire hope of turning the corner and competing for a trip to Atlanta. No positive momentum to be found in Lexington, Ky., heading into conference play.

14. Vanderbilt: The Commodores are starting the year off on the wrong foot with a 14-12 loss at home to Western Kentucky. Every SEC East team should be safe to pencil in Vanderbilt as an automatic win until further notice. The momentum right now is inching coach Derek Mason toward the hot seat.
