The start of the College Football Playoff meant the field for title contention expanded from two to four, but some aren’t happy with the current system.

Count UCF among those schools, as the Knights went undefeated, but still couldn’t make the final four. Another mid-major conference coach agrees.

Akron coach Terry Bowden, who used to coach Auburn, said on “3 Man Front” on WJOX on Tuesday that he thinks the Playoff field should expand to eight teams:

“I wish I could look my players in the eye and say, ‘Men, we’re playing for the national championship.’ But in reality, we’re not,” Bowden said. “Now, we can get a poster that says we’re the national champions just as Central Florida did. But as I said, the Playoff must go to eight teams. Even a team with one loss in the SEC or even probably the Big Ten is going to be higher ranked than a team at the mid-major level because of strength of schedule. … It’s hard to argue which are really the strongest teams.”

Certainly, that expansion would give at least one mid-major school a chance to play in the CFP, and that would be something that many fans would argue is a good thing.
