Taking a position-by-position look at Florida vs. South Carolina, here’s what to watch for in Saturday’s contest between the Gators and Gamecocks:

QUARTERBACK – Push: Both teams are using backups, and getting a mixed bag from their QBs in terms of production. Both  hover slightly above 50 percent in completion percentage. Florida QB Treon Harris (56-of-102, 853 yards, 5 TD, INT) has fewer turnovers, but also fewer yards and touchdowns than South Carolina QB Perry Orth (89-of-166, 1,180 yards, 7 TD, 6 INT).

RUNNING BACK – Push: When the goal is to get the ball across the goal line, Florida RB Kelvin Taylor does an excellent job with 11 touchdowns on the year. Taylor has nine rushing touchdowns in SEC play, the most for a Gators RB k since Fred Taylor, Kelvin’s father, scored nine in 1997. When it comes to yards per carry, USC RB Brandon Wilds (96 carries, 507 yards, 2 TD) has a notable edge over Taylor (171 carries, 631 yards). Wilds missed three games with bruised ribs, but has been averaging 5.3 yards per attempt since his return.

WIDE RECEIVER, TIGHT ENDS – Florida: Even though South Carolina has one of the SEC’s premiere receivers in Pharoh Cooper (48 catches, 656 yards, 5 TD), Florida has the better overall receiving corps. Junior Demarcus Robinson (45 catches, 477 yards, 2 TD) is coming off his best game of the season against Vanderbilt (9 catches, 106 yards). Freshman Antonio Callaway (20 catches, 429 yards, 3 TD) has established himself as one of Harris’ favorite deep targets. Slot receiver Brandon Powell (22 catches, 308 yards, 3 TD) has speed to get behind the coverage or take a short pass to the end zone in any passing situation.

Both teams’ have tight ends who are top-40 SEC receivers by yardage. South Carolina’s Jerell Adams comes in at No. 31 with 270 yards and three touchdowns on 18 receptions. Florida uses multiple tight ends, but Jake McGee is the go-to pass catcher of the bunch with 226 yards (No. 40 in the conference) and three touchdowns on 26 catches.

OFFENSIVE LINE – South Carolina: As the Gamecocks QB, Orth has thrown about the same number of passes (166) as Will Grier threw for Florida (161) and has been sacked fewer times (13 to 11). Wilds’ better yards per carry than Taylor in the ground game also tips this position group comparison in USC’s favor. UF’s offensive line is coming off its worst game of the season against Vanderbilt, in which the Gators could not get the passing game going or grind it out on the ground.

DEFENSIVE LINE – Push: If DL Jonathan Bullard (41 tackles, 5 sacks) and DT Joey Ivie (15 tackles, 4 sacks) were healthy, Florida would have the advantage. The Gators will still have the best pass rusher on the field in DE Alex McCalister (22 tackles, 7 sacks), the current SEC Defensive Player of the Week. Bullard has been the main disruptor on the line, and UF will need CeCe Jefferson (18 tackles, 1.5 sacks) and Caleb Brantley (20 tackles, 2 sacks) to step up and play to their potential to make up for that absence.

USC defensive ends Darius English, Marquavius Lewis and Dante Sawyer have combined for 10 sacks on the season and could be trouble for Florida’s struggling offensive line.

LINEBACKERS – South Carolina: Though UF’s defense has a much better reputation than South Carolina’s this season, the Gamecocks edge the Gators in this position group. USC’s Skai Moore will be the leading tackler on the field, with 88 total tackles including two sacks. Moore also excels in pass coverage with four interceptions. T.J. Holloman has 40 tackles and two interceptions for South Carolina. Florida gets more balanced production from its top two linebackers, Antonio Morrison (59 tackles, 2 sacks) and Jarrad Davis (58 tackles, 2 sacks).

SECONDARY – Florida: If Orth is planning on another three-touchdown, zero-interception outing against Florida like he had against Tennessee, he could be in for a rude awakening. Whether Florida, No. 12 in passing yards allowed in the FBS, chooses to single out CB Vernon Hargreaves III (4 INT, 2 pass breakups) for a matchup with Cooper or rotate with cornerbacks Jalen Tabor (2 INT, 8 PBU) and Quincy Wilson (INT, 4 PBU), it will take some creative playcalling for USC to pass on the UF defense. S Keanu Neal (INT, PBU) is questionable with a foot injury.

The Gators might be able to get their air attack going against South Carolina’s No. 62 passing defense. USC struggled against the Volunteers in pass coverage, but S Isaiah Johnson did snag his first interception of the season.
