For a program with as much sustained excellence as Alabama under Nick Saban, the Crimson Tide hasn’t had as much continuity within the coaching staff as some programs.

Some of Saban’s top assistants, such as Florida coach Jim McElwain, have moved on to bigger opportunities. Others have bolted with the suggestion that Saban isn’t easy to work for. But others have stuck it out with Saban and been able to enjoy tremendous success at Alabama.

Below are Alabama’s current assistants ranked by how many years they’ve coached with Saban:

1. Bobby Williams, tight ends 16 years
Williams has worked off and on with Saban longer than anyone on the current Alabama staff, including the past eight years with the Crimson Tide. Their relationship dates back much further as Williams was running backs coach when Saban took over at Michigan State in 1995. He also worked with Saban at LSU and with the Dolphins before rejoining him in his second year at Alabama, where he’s been one of the Tide’s top recruiters.

2. Kirby Smart, defensive coordinator  11 years
Widely considered one of the best assistants in the country, Smart has been with Saban all nine seasons in Tuscaloosa and also spent a year each with him at LSU and with the Dolphins. A tremendous recruiter and leader of what is annually one of the country’s best defenses, the Tide pays Smart like a head coach, $1.5 million a year, to stick around and he’s been well worth it.

3. Burton Burns, running backs  9 years
Burns left Clemson to join Saban’s first staff at Alabama back in 2007 and has been a key part of Alabama’s success ever since. The coaching veteran has worked with a steady stream of outstanding running backs with the Crimson Tide, including Mark Ingram, Trent Richardson, Eddie Lacy and T.J. Yeldon, to name just a few. In Ingram, he groomed the school’s only Heisman Trophy winner.

4. Bo Davis, defensive line  6 years
Davis came back to Alabama in 2014 to start his second stint working for the Crimson Tide under Saban. This will be his sixth season as an official assistant coach for Saban, but he also logged some time working for the man as strength and conditioning coach at LSU. After Davis’ return to take over the defensive line, Alabama ranked No. 4 in the nation last year at stopping the run.

5. Mel Tucker, defensive backs  4 years
A former NFL defensive coordinator, Tucker is in his first season at Alabama, but he and Saban go way back. He worked for the head coach as a graduate assistant at Michigan State in the late 1990s and then spent a year coaching defensive backs under Saban at LSU.

6. Mario Cristobal, offensive line  3 years
A former head coach at Florida International and an assistant at Miami, Cristobal joined the Alabama staff in 2013 and almost immediately began making headway into South Florida recruiting. Not only that, Cristobal’s offensive lines have been dominant despite replacing All-Americans seemingly on an annual basis. He worked with Cam Robinson to make him a starting left tackle as a true freshman.

6. Billy Napier, wide receivers  3 years
Napier developed a reputation as one of the game’s best young offensive minds during his tenure at Clemson, then started working for Saban’s protégé McElwain at Colorado State. The recommendation from the former Crimson Tide offensive coordinator must have been enough for Saban to bring Napier into Alabama in 2013, where he helped Amari Cooper become the nation’s best receiver and a first-round NFL draft pick.

8. Lane Kiffin, offensive coordinator  2 years
It certainly raised some eyebrows when Saban hired the former Tennessee and USC head coach to take over the offense in 2014, but the two seemed to mesh well enough last year and heading into his second season in Tuscaloosa, Kiffin is looking to replicate success. The Tide averaged 36.9 points per game last year, ranking 15th in the nation.

9. Tosh Lupoi, linebackers First year
Lupoi was an assistant at Cal and Washington before coming to Alabama last season and working as an analyst. An excellent recruiter, he was able to join the coaching staff officially in January and is working with outside linebackers.
