Sure, Les Miles may have lost his last five straight games to Nick Saban, which certainly didn’t sit well with LSU’s decision-makers, but he was the only coach to defeat him three times at Alabama.

That’s significant considering there are several SEC schools who lack any success at all against the Tide with Saban, now coaching his 10th season in Tuscaloosa.

One of those schools, Kentucky, visits Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday.

The Wildcats are 0-3 against Saban at Alabama. Joining them are Tennessee (0-9), Arkansas (0-8), Missouri (0-2) and Vanderbilt (0-1) who all combine for an abysmal 0-23 mark against Saban over that time.

Note: Alabama’s wins over Arkansas and Vanderbilt in 2007 were vacated, so those weren’t included.

OPPONENT W-L ALA AVG MARGIN OF VICTORY
Tennessee 0-9 21.4
Arkansas 0-8 26.1
Kentucky 0-3 20.7
Missouri 0-2 30.5
Vanderbilt 0-1 34.0

While Missouri is a relative newcomer to the league joining in 2012, they are unsuccessful at beating Saban in two attempts.

Interestingly, the only SEC West team without a win against Saban is Arkansas. LSU (3-7), Mississippi State (1-8) and Auburn (3-6) got shots in during Saban’s most vulnerable year, his first one in 2007. For the Bulldogs, that was their only win.

Texas A&M earned a win during Year 1 in the SEC in 2012 but haven’t beaten the Crimson Tide since that time. Ole Miss finally earned a win in attempt No. 8 in 2014 before getting another in 2015. While the last three contests have been close, the previous five games were one-sided in Saban’s favor, especially a 52-7 Alabama victory in 2011.

But back to the Razorbacks. Full disclosure: Because the NCAA vacated Saban’s first five wins of 2007, Alabama’s win that season doesn’t count toward the record book. The most embarrassing stretch for the Razorbacks was in 2012 and 2013 as Arkansas lost by the exact score of 52-0 in both games.

Alabama is 3-0 against Kentucky under Saban. While Vanderbilt and Kentucky are bottom-dwellers in the SEC at present, and in general, the Commodores had a strong period under former coach James Franklin, and the Wildcats had a good run under former coach Rich Brooks.

Kentucky went to four straight bowl games from 2006-10. Still, Alabama beat Kentucky twice during that time period in 2008 and 2009 and then again in 2013, current head coach Mark Stoops’ first year at the program.

Both 2008 and 2013 were impressive defensive performances for the Crimson Tide. In 2008, the Alabama defense held Kentucky to a miniscule 35 total rushing yards, practically unheard of in SEC regular season play. In 2013, the Tide held the Wildcats to 170 total yards.

Additionally, the Crimson Tide had three different running backs score touchdowns with two of them — T.J. Yeldon and Kenyan Drake — rushing for more than 100 yards.

Alabama played Vanderbilt in 2007 and 2011. Again, Alabama is technically 1-0 against Vanderbilt under Saban because of the five vacated wins in 2007. In 2011, Saban earned the rare SEC shutout, bullying Vanderbilt 34-0.

Saban beat Missouri in the regular season in 2012 and in the SEC Championship Game in 2014. Both contests were decided by a similar score. In 2012, Alabama beat Missouri 42-10 before topping the Tigers 42-13 in Atlanta in 2014. In the SEC title game, Alabama allowed just 41 yards rushing to Missouri.

Tennessee is perhaps the team most dominated by Saban. He is 9-0 against big orange. With the exception of 2009 and 2015, seven of those victories were lopsided. The 2009 is the most memorable game of the bunch because Alabama won in such dramatic fashion. You all remember Terrence Cody, a.k.a. Mount Cody, and the “Rocky Block” in that 12-10 victory.

Also, Alabama reeled off four straight wins with a 30-plus point differential. In 2010, Alabama won 41-10. In 2011, the Alabama defense held Tennessee to just 6 points, two first half field goals, in a 37-6 romp. The 2012 contest yielded a 44-13 Alabama win. In 2013, Saban crushed three of the five winless teams we’ve referenced in this story in succession. First, Alabama beat Kentucky 48-7, then shut out Arkansas 52-0 and capped it off with a 45-10 win against Tennessee.

Of the five unsuccessful teams, Kentucky, Arkansas and Tennessee all have opportunities in the next three weeks, in that order. Vanderbilt gets an opportunity next season (assuming Saban returns to Tuscaloosa). Missouri must wait a little longer.

Since 2009, the average composite score of the Alabama-Tennessee game equates to a 37-12 victory for the Crimson Tide. During that same span, the average composite score of the Alabama-Arkansas game amounts to a 36-8 victory for Alabama.

Saban is 3-0 against Tennessee head coach Butch Jones and 3-0 against Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema.

He’s already 1-0 against Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops, and he’ll try to make it 2-0 Saturday at Bryant-Denny.
