The San Francisco 49ers announced on Friday that they have released 15 players, according to a report on the team website.

That list did not include former Alabama defensive back Vinnie Sunseri, but it didn’t keep him from being cut.

Sunseri was waived by the 49ers, along with seven other players who have fewer than four years of experience. Sunseri must clear the NFL waiver wire before becoming a free agent.

“The 49ers roster currently stands at 71 and must be trimmed to 53 by 1:00 p.m. PT on Saturday, Sept. 2,” the website report stated.

Sunseri, a safety, appeared in six games for the 49ers last season.

He played on some of Alabama’s best teams under Nick Saban between 2011 and 2013, and was a regarded as a team leader in the secondary. Sunseri had a career-high 54 tackles in 2012 to go along with four career interceptions. His efforts helped guide the Crimson Tide to back-to-back national titles.
