Not even tennis great Novak Djokovic or young golfing phenom Jordan Spieth’s performances could match O.J. Howard’s last month.

The Alabama tight end was named the United States Sports Academy’s Male Athlete of the Month for January on Wednesday after his pivotal effort in the 45-40 win over Clemson in the CFP National Championship on Jan. 11.

Howard, who was named the Offensive Most Valuable Player, finished with 5 receptions for 208 yards and 2 touchdowns. His receiving yardage set a record for the most in a national championship game, the most by an Alabama tight end in any game and the most by any Alabama player — regardless of position — in a bowl game.

Howard beat out Djokovic, who won an Open Era-record sixth Australian Open title and 11th major championship overall. Third place went to Spieth, who had three top-five finishes, highlighted by a win at the 2016 Hyundai Tournament of Champions.

The Female Athlete of the Month was women’s ski racer Lindsey Vonn, who won her 37th World Cup gold medal in Italy on Jan. 23.
