TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Even though the University of Alabama football team is visiting Ole Miss this week, Hugh Freeze isn’t the only coach who has the Crimson Tide on his mind.

With Arkansas on a bye and hosting No. 3 Alabama next week, it has Bret Bielema’s full attention too.

“Obviously I’ll be very in-tune to the Ole Miss-Alabama game,” he said, and not from Fayetteville. CBS has asked him to be an analyst for the game in its New York studio (3:30 p.m. ET).

Coming off what Bielema called a “heartbreaking” 35-28 overtime loss to Texas A&M, the coach already has the Razorbacks (3-2, 0-2 SEC) working the Crimson Tide.

“We actually introduced Alabama starting yesterday,” he said during the SEC coaches’ teleconference with reporters on Wednesday. “We had a couple of periods dedicated to their top plays, especially first-down plays, offense, defense, basic introduction to the kicking game.”

“Today we’ll double the amount of volume dedicated to Alabama and Thursday’s practice will be a heavy dose of Alabama prep on all three phases of the team.”

Meanwhile, Freeze estimated that on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest, his defense is at about a 6 in terms of recognizing everything it needs to from Alabama’s numerous offensive formations. Nevertheless, he’s looking for something new and different from offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin.

“The thing that I do know about Lane, and offensive coordinators like him who think out of of the box a bit and try and get matchups that are advantageous for them, he’s going to have something, particularly with an off-week, that we haven’t seen,” Freeze said. “I know that.”

The coach also pointed to Alabama’s numerous playmakers, like running backs T.J. Yeldon and Derrick Henry and wide receiver Amari Cooper on the perimeter, who make it extremely difficult to shut down one aspect of the Crimson Tide’s offense. Kiffin can simply dial up someone else.

“You can’t load up on both every snap,” Freeze said. “So there’s going to come a time where our kids have to win a one-on-one. If you take turnovers and everything, if all of that is equal it’ll come down to who wins the most of those one-on-one battles.”

As for the 6, he hopes to have it up to a 9 by game time. Ole Miss is ranked 11th and both teams are 4-0 (1-0 SEC).

“When you get into this we want to measure yourself each year, and I believe we’ve taken steps in the right direction the last couple of years to complete in this game,” Freeze said. “But it’s still a tall task.”
