At this point, Austin Allen is firmly entrenched as the starting signal-caller for Bret Bielema and the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Allen has been brilliant during fall scrimmage periods — going a combined 29-of-40 for 309 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions.

Behind Allen is where things get a bit tricky. Rafe Peavey — the presumed No. 2 heading into 2016 — is still battling some lingering back issues. During Saturday’s scrimmage, Peavey did not participate. The injury has opened the door for fellow quarterbacks Cole Kelley and Ty Storey, according to Bielema (per Hawgs Illustrated).

“[Peavey] does everything right. He asks all the right questions. He puts in as much work as anybody, if not more. He’s playing with an injured back. He’s doing all the things we ask him to do, but the bottom line is performance and where we are, and I needed to see [Storey and Kelley] to see if they could be beyond him.”

Kelley — a 6-foot-7, 258-pound freshman behemoth out of Louisiana — has been drawing rave reviews for his arm strength and physical ability. Bielema gushed about his performance thus far in camp.

“I was very pleased with Cole, in particular. I think he is continuing to get better every day. I think his upside is really, really good. He is very competitive and has a very good football mind. I think the kids respond to him. I love getting in the huddle and hearing him give directions and seeing the way people respond.”

Storey didn’t fare as well — going 2-of-9 for 24 yards (although he was victimized by some drops.

It will be fascinating to see how Arkansas approaches this situation. Kelley’s future seems to be exceptionally bright. Would it make sense to have Kelley see mop-up duty as the No. 2 this season, or preserve a year of his eligibility — whilst going with the combination of Peavey and Storey?

It’s certainly something to look at going forward.
