When Bret Bielema came to Arkansas from Wisconsin, he brought along the no-nonsense Midwestern toughness associated with Big Ten football. Apparently, that attitude extends to the recruiting trail for Bielema.

The coach, who on Saturday was given a two-year extension and a raise, went on “Sports Talk with Bo Mattingly” on Arkansas radio this weekend to discuss the Razorbacks’ recruiting class, which ranked 23rd in the 247sports industry composite. In his appearance, Bielema talked about the matter-of-fact way Arkansas approaches recruiting.

“I want guys that leave campus and know this is what they want to be a part of. I want guys that come back two or three times and say, ‘This is where I’m going,’” Bielema said. “If they’ve got to pick a hat, release the balloons and cut a cake on Signing Day, I probably don’t have time for them. Not to say that’s always the case, but it’s the direction I’ve leaned during my head coaching career.”

Bielema added that the program puts potential recruits through multiple screens, both social media and academic, before beginning the recruitment process with a player.

As Arkansas improves, Bielema doesn’t plan to change from the mindset that rebuilt the program.

“As we have more and more success, the last thing you want to do is deviate from the plan that got you where you wanted to be,” Bielema said. “We’ll never be one of those teams that has seven guys that are going to pick a hat on (National Signing Day). That’s just not my deal.”

Clearly, Bielema doesn’t approve of the all-day programming on National Signing Day, which this year featured many of the nation’s top undecided players announcing their decisions.
