Arkansas is coming off a one-point loss to Alabama and is looking for its first conference win. The task doesn’t get any easier this week as No. 10 Georgia travels to Little Rock to face the Razorbacks.

We dig into the good and bad numbers after Arkansas’ first six games of the 2014 season.

THE GOOD

39: The percentage of third downs the Arkansas defense is allowing its opponents to convert. The Hogs have been very good on defense this season and its ability to get off the field on third downs is a big reason why. Arkansas’ ability to not give opposing offenses extra opportunities has been a big reason why it has been in games late.

33:16: The Razorbacks’ average time of possession this season. That’s nearly six minutes more than their opponents. Arkansas has the ability to control the pace of the game and that benefitted them against teams like Texas Tech and Texas A&M. If the Hogs can continue to win the time of possession, not only will they be in games late, but they’ll begin to win some of these close games.

50: The percentage of fourth down Arkansas has converted. Bret Bielema has shown he likes to take some chances, and so far they’ve paid off. If the Hogs can continue to move the chains on fourth downs, that could prove frustrating for opposing defenses having to stay on the field longer.

THE BAD

11: Fumbles for the Razorbacks this season. Only five have been lost, but ball security has been an issue. Arkansas is not yet good enough to turn the ball over and overcome that. It must protect the ball; we saw last week against Alabama how quickly promising drives can be killed due to fumbles.

23.8: The average number of points per game for Arkansas opponents. That number is a little high; the offense isn’t going to put up 35 or 40-plus points every week, so you’d love to see that number hovering around 20. Some good defenses and good offenses remain on the schedule for the Hogs, so if the defense can hold opponents to around 20 points per game, Arkansas will find itself with a chance to win a lot of these games down the stretch.

89: The number of rushing yards Arkansas managed against Alabama. Yes, Alex Collins sat the first half, but neither he or Jonathan Williams had much success against the Crimson Tide. The run game is Arkansas’ bread and butter, so the Hogs need to get back to having 250-plus yard outings on the ground.
