Gus Malzahn was probably just happy to cool off his ever-warming hot seat for one more week.

But the Auburn coach earned a national accolade in the process, being named the Dodd Trophy’s coach of the week Monday after pulling off a thrilling 18-13 win against then-No. 18 LSU, according to a report from 247Sports.

“Coach Malzahn was an easy choice for this week’s coach of the week honors, as no one had a more thrilling win than his Auburn Tigers,” said Jim Terry, chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. “Any time an unranked team can beat a ranked team it’s a big accomplishment, but for Auburn this was truly a must-win game.”

Auburn won the game despite failing to score a touchdown. Instead, the reliable leg of kicker Daniel Carson and a stout defense gave Malzahn a ranked win he so desperately needed.
