Callers to sports talk radio shows sometimes reveal the most passionate fans from a given fan base. In this case with South Carolina, a caller named John released his frustrations on 107.5 The Game about coach Will Muschamp following the 38-24 loss to Florida on Saturday to drop to 0-2 on the season.

John opened the call comparing the athletics departments at Mississippi State and South Carolina, and asked a rhetorical question about the Gamecocks being in a similar spot in the SEC pecking order. John then pointed out that Mississippi State under Dan Mullen in Year 6 was ranked No. 1 in the College Football Playoff rankings.

“Next year is Will’s sixth year at South Carolina, if he gets one,” the caller continued. “Do you honestly think there’s any chance in hell that South Carolina is going to be ranked when the first Playoff rankings come out next season?”

A host, Jay Phillips, said he’d be very surprised.

“OK, then why are we still doing this,” John replied.

In Year 5, John said it looks like South Carolina is in either Year 1 or going backwards.

“It doesn’t look like we’re making any progress as far as winning and losing is concerned,” John continued. “You just said it yourself, it’s a results-oriented business, we’re not getting the results. Year 5 under (Steve) Spurrier, we’re in Atlanta. Year 5 of this year a lot of people are asking are we even going to win a game.”

John then went on to take a shot at Athletics Director Ray Tanner as his voice raised.

“If you feel good about where this program is right now, you need your head examined, and you certainly don’t need to be the AD,” he said. “Because any other idiot would tell you this is not good.”
