New Florida coach Jim McElwain is stockpiling three-star players in his first full recruiting cycle in Gainesville.

The Gators landed a 13th commitment Friday from running back Lamical Perine, who also held offers from Mississippi State, Minnesota, Colorado State and Marshall, among others.

The 5-foot-11, 210-pound Perine is a fast, decisive runner who can deploy a strong stiff-arm in the open field. He’s rated as the nation’s 38th-best running back of the ’16 class.

“It’s just The Swamp,” Perine said of choosing Florida, according to 247Sports. “It’s one of the best places in the nation to play. I love it.”

Florida already has a commitment from four-star running back Mark Thompson of Dodge City Community College. Thompson and four-star cornerback Chauncey Gardner are the only four-star players McElwain has secured so far.

The Gators signed a pair five-star players and a trio of four-star players in February, but faced a huge handicap so soon after the coaching transition.

Georgia (9), LSU (8) and Ole Miss (8) each have commitments from four times as many four- and five-star players as Florida during the ’16 recruiting cycle. But only one team — Kentucky, with 16 — has more commitments.
