Several SEC teams are returning elite defensive linemen for 2015, and several more will add elite high school pass rushers on National Signing Day.

With that said, Missouri has paced the SEC in sacks the last two seasons, and it’s no coincidence the Tigers have won the SEC East two years in a row. Michael Sam and Kony Ealy wreaked havoc on the SEC in 2013, with the Tigers racking up 41 sacks, but Markus Golden and Shane Ray led the Tigers’ defensive line to an SEC-leading 42 sacks in 2014. Golden and Ray will both head to the NFL, but Mizzou’s defensive line may not miss a beat.

Talk about consistency.

But there could be a new defensive line on the rise for 2015: the Florida Gators.

Last year, Geoff Collins’ defense finished second in the SEC at Mississippi State with 37 sacks in 2014, just five behind Missouri with one less game. Now, Collins will bring his Psycho Defense, as it’s become known, to Gainesville, which was very good at getting after the quarterback in Starkville. Add in new defensive line coach Terrell Williams, and the Gators are cooking with peanut oil. Williams was the defensive line coach for a 2011 Texas A&M defense that led the nation with 51 sacks.

Collins’ scheme is very similar to Will Muschamp’s. He’ll continue to use Muschamp’s hybrid defensive lineman-linebacker Buck, while also using the hybrid linebacker-safety, the one Matt Elam played so well. So, much of the same terminology will be used, and that should help Florida’s players have a smooth transition.

Will Muschamp’s defenses were very good, but the one area — like Alabama — that has been noticeably absent is major sack numbers. That should change under the Gators’ new staff.

Many different schemes and ideologies can rack up sacks, but, of course, teams have to have the horses to run it. Dante Fowler is gone and will be a first-round pick, but senior Jon Bullard returning is a huge piece to the puzzle. The uber athletic and lean Alex McCalister could be a monster, as he finished second on the team with six sacks. Bryan Cox returns with four sacks, and Bullard returns with 12 quarterback hurries. The Gators are also looking good to land two elite defensive end five-star prospects in Byron Cowart and CeCe Jefferson on National Signing Day.

The Gators’ defensive play shouldn’t drop much under Collins, and with the addition of more sacks, Florida’s defensive line could be one of the most disruptive in college football.
