The Florida Gators officially announced the hiring of new defensive coordinator Geoff Collins on Tuesday afternoon.

Collins, formerly the defensive coordinator of Mississippi State, comes to the Gators after leading the Bulldogs’ defenses to top-five scoring numbers during his time in Starkville.

Florida head coach Jim McElwain said it was Collins’ consistency over the course of his career that stuck out to him the most.

I got to know Geoff personally during my time at Alabama and have stayed in touch with him since and his defenses have been successful everywhere he has been,” McElwain said. “It was important to maintain some of the same philosophies and concepts that have made the defenses around here successful with this hire and our players will continue to progress under his direction.

Collins’ aggressive defensive approach has garnered him the nickname “Minister of Mayhem.” MSU ranked second in the SEC this season with 36 total sacks behind only Missouri, who recorded 40 sacks.

According to UF’s release, Collins will replace current defensive coordinator DJ Durkin following the team’s Birmingham Bowl matchup against ECU on Jan. 3.
