The result was never close and the Florida Gators handled Eastern Kentucky with ease on Saturday afternoon. Offensively, it was one of Florida’s best performances all season as the Gators scored 52 points, their second-highest point total of the season.

Florida filled up the stat sheet with several big plays, but it was one touchdown in particular that stood out among the rest.

Theoretically, the Gators should have had their way on offense this past weekend. Facing a less than impressive FCS opponent, Florida not only outmatches EKU in every area in size and speed, but also in talent as well. However, fans have witnessed some abysmal offensive performances thus far in 2014 from the Gators, so it wasn’t farfetched to expect occasional struggles.

This touchdown pass from Treon Harris and Demarcus Robinson, however, was not one of those times.

Here are some key parts to this play.

Robinson’s catch

The first aspect of this touchdown that catches your attention is the spectacular catch made by Robinson. Although he’s been inconsistent throughout the year, Florida fans have seen flashes of brilliance from the sophomore. He’s shown a propensity to go up and make some very athletic catches, providing optimism for some semblance of playmaking ability among the Florida receiving corps.

On this play, Robinson uses all of his 6-foot-2, 200-pound frame to rise above the defensive back and make the catch. Not only does he make the catch, but he still has the awareness to keep both feet inbounds in the corner of the end zone and complete the play.

Robinson is the only receiver to have shown the ability to make these kinds of plays and the Gators will need his playmaking ability both this season and in the future.

Throw by Treon Harris

The true freshman quarterback hasn’t had much success throwing the ball this season. His attempts have been limited and other than 215 passing yards against Vanderbilt, he didn’t throw for more than 60 yards in either of his two starts. Harris recorded 162 passing yards against EKU, but this was easily his best throw of the day.

Accuracy has never been Harris’ strong suit in his first season, but you wouldn’t know it from this play. Despite a defender draped over Robinson, Harris knows the athleticism Robinson possesses and throws it up to his receiver where only he can get it.

EKU doesn’t provide the best competition for Harris, but as a young quarterback it’s the reps that matter. Seeing the play unfold and executing a tough throw like that should pay dividends in the future when similar opportunities arise against better teams.

Pass protection by Taylor

One minor positive from this play comes from running back Kelvin Taylor. If you aren’t looking at him, you’ll probably miss it. The sophomore running back has missed out on significant playing time this season because of his deficiencies in pass protection, but not here.

EKU brings a five-man rush against the Gators with a blitz from the nickelback. Taylor wisely picks up the blitzing defensive back and knocks him down. The blocking by Taylor keeps the pressure off Harris and allows the quarterback to execute the touchdown pass.

Because this is against EKU, everything needs to be taken with a grain of salt, but we have all seen how dynamic Taylor can be in the running game. His progression in pass protection will only increase his playing time and subsequently increase him impact on offense as he grows into a more complete running back.
