At the coaches teleconference on Wednesday, Florida Gators head coach Will Muschamp announced true freshman Treon Harris will be the Gators’ starting quarterback when the team takes the field against Georgia on Nov. 1.

“Treon, you saw what he did late in the game,” Muschamp said about his new quarterback. “He has a knack for making plays and making some good things happen.”

Harris takes over for the embattled redshirt junior Jeff Driskel. The former starter struggled all season long and didn’t impress last weekend, either. He completed just 6-of-19 passes for 50 yards, zero touchdowns and two interceptions. The two quarterbacks split time against Missouri, but once the game was out of reach, Harris took over in the latter portions of the game. He led the Gators on two scoring drives, including a 15-play, 82-yard drive to end the game.

Because the Gators have a bye week, Muschamp feels more comfortable naming Harris the starter and believes the extra week will help him grasp more of the playbook in time for the annual showdown with the Bulldogs.

Despite the change at quarterback, Muschamp still wants Driskel — who’s been the starter since 2012 — to play a role within the offense.

“Jeff’s a guy that’s an experienced player for us,” Muschamp said. “We’ll continue to move forward with Jeff playing a role on our football team as a quarterback. What that role will be, we’ll see moving forward.”
