2014 UT Martin vs Mississippi State

The No. 1 Mississippi State Bulldogs improved to 9-0 in 2014 with a 45-16 win over the UT Martin Skyhawks in Starkville. The Bulldogs led just 7-3 after one quarter, but ran off 31 unanswered points before UTM scored two touchdowns in garbage time in the fourth quarter.

Dak Prescott played just one series in the second half, and in a little more than a half of play he amassed 260 total yards — 206 through the air and 54 on the ground. He threw two touchdown passes, including a 55-yard strike to Joe Morrow, and ran for a 48-yard touchdown on the first play of the second quarter. He set a school record for total offense in a single season and became the first MSU Bulldog to clear 3,000 total yards in one season by the time he was removed from the game.

Josh Robinson, the SEC’s second-leading rusher entering the game, carried the ball just six times for 33 yards, but as a team the Bulldogs ran for 254 yards and three touchdowns. No Mississippi State rusher reached the 100-yard mark, but four players rushed for more than 30 yards for the game, led by Ashton Shumpert’s 82 yards and a touchdown. Nine players caught passes for Mississippi State on the day, but only one (Gabe Myles) caught more than three passes for the game.

The MSU defense allowed the Skyhawks to score two fourth quarter touchdowns, but still held them to fewer than 400 yards for the game. The Skyhawks dropped to 5-6 on the season following the loss.
