Football programs aren’t the only ones reaching out to Mark Richt these days.

Could Richt become a politician someday?

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Richt is reportedly being recruited to run for governor in 2018.

Current governor Nathan Deal is serving his final term in Atlanta, and both parties are looking at possible candidates for the 2018 gubernatorial election. Richt is one of the state’s most recognizable figures, so he would be an intriguing candidate.

That being said, Richt has never shown any interest in a political career, has not publicly stated if he supports a political party and has avoided making political statements in the past.

Richt was fired on Sunday after 15 years as Georgia’s head coach. He has a career record of 145-51. The Bulldogs’ bowl game will be his final game at UGA.

Several schools have reportedly shown interest in hiring him, including Virginia, Miami, Maryland and Missouri.

In the past, a number of football coaches have tried to enter politics after their coaching careers were over. Former Nebraska coach Tom Osborne, for example, made a failed bid for governor of the Cornhusker State in 2006.

Legendary Georgia coach Vince Dooley considered running for governor after retiring in 1988, but chose not to. Instead, he continued as Georgia’s athletic director, a position he held from 1979-2004.
