Quick thoughts on Georgia’s 55-9 win over Charleston Southern

What it means: Georgia earned a blowout win, got out of the game healthy for the most part and got the backups some experience. That’s about all you can ask for in a game against an FCS opponent.

What I liked: The first half execution on both sides. Georgia showed no mercy, battering the Buccaneers all afternoon. It started early, with the Bulldogs scoring long touchdowns on two of their first three offensive plays. They outgained Charleston Souther 336-72 in the first half, snuffing out the Bucs offensive attempts at every turn, looking to strip the ball at every opportunity. Additionally, Georgia got some experience against an option offense, which they’ll face next week.

What I didn’t like: The Bulldogs will be heading into their rivalry game against Georgia Tech without much of a test. Georgia ran up the score early against CSU without the starters breaking a sweat, but they’ll be in for a battle against the physical Yellow Jackets, who average nearly 330 yards per game on the ground.

Key play: Georgia’s first offensive snap. The rout was on early in this one. After Georgia picked up a fumble on Charleston Southern’s first possession, they immediately went for the kill. Hutson Mason aired it out to Chris Conley after a play-action fake and found the receiver wide open on his way to the end zone. It was the first score in a dominant, 38-3 first half for the Dawgs.

Who’s the man: Nick Chubb showed once again that he’s a beast. The freshman took his first carry of the game 83 yards for a touchdown and finished with 113 yards and 2 TD on just 9 carries, his sixth straight 100-yard game. Chubb is on track to match Todd Gurley’s first year in Athens and could well surpass it if the Dawgs wind up in the SEC Championship.

What’s next: The Bulldogs get some Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate next week against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in their annual rivalry tilt. Georgia Tech is already set for a matchup with Florida State in the ACC championship, but they certainly won’t be looking past this grudge match.
