Former Texas QB Major Applewhite is now the new head coach at Houston.

He was promoted to the post after acting as the Cougars’ offensive coordinator for two seasons. He took over once Tom Herman left for the Texas job.

Herman’s name had been associated with multiple jobs — namely Texas and LSU — for over a year. He was unquestionably the hottest name within the coaching rumors conjecture.

According to this report from Gridiron Now, Herman and Applewhite had discussions about potentially heading to Baton Rouge. Applewhite would’ve been the offensive coordinator at LSU under Herman. In fact, Applewhite grew up a few minutes from LSU’s campus:

“[We] knew the possibility was out there. You talk about all kind of things that are coming down the pipe career-wise. Most of that was between (Herman) and his family. At the same time, we didn’t really consume ourselves with conversations like that. It was just like, ‘Hey, this is a possibility, this is real. OK. All right, well, where are we on third downs with Louisville? Where are we on our third down study for Memphis? It was brief, quick and back to the task at hand. That’s just part of the business, part of what happens with college football.”

As such, Applewhite is currently enjoying his first head coaching job — whilst Herman is hoping to bring Texas back to relevancy.
